Bio
Anthony Small is a local writer and musician, arts advocate, Co-Executive Producer of Los Lobos Native Sons, a documentary on the legendary 50-year career of Los Lobos, which made it's world premier at SXSW in March 2026. Small is also a founder of Dana Point ROCKS®, which includes his Dana Point Times art and music column, and curated events and programs. Small is also a City of Dana Point Arts & Culture Ambassador, and former Executive Director of Music Preserves Foundation, which shared the rich, multicultural history of American Music. Small curates the music for some of the stages at REDO Vintage Maker’s Market and other Dana Point events, giving opportunities to emerging songwriters and established artists. Look for Anthony's story about working in the minor leagues, as part of the upcoming book “Baseball in Riverside”, due in October from Riverside Historical Society. “Dana Point ROCKS: Dream Big, Do Something About It”, a collection of his eight years of Dana Point Times columns (with additional updates, photos, and commentary) is also expected later in 2026.
Anthony Small’s solo album, “El Viejo” was released in October 2023 and is produced by Matt Samia of Mojave Ghost. Small is backed by lead guitarist Samia, bassist Corey McCormick (Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Neil Young, Chris Cornell), legendary keyboardist/producer Peter Levin (Amanda Shires, Allman Brothers, Blind Boys of Alabama) and drummer/percussionist Fredo Ortiz (Los Lobos, Beastie Boys, Tenacious D). On his May 2026 EP “Migrant Lobos”, Small also covers Los Lobos' “The Valley” and “A Matter of Time”. Small's powerful voice and commanding stage presence deliver his evocative, catchy, sometimes dark-themed lyrics. His influences include Jason Isbell, Los Lobos, Raul Malo of The Mavericks, Dwight Yoakam and U2, and his passionate songs tell stories of broken hearts, recurring dreams, and hope.
Small was named by the California Arts Council and Arts Orange County as recipient of a 2023 Individual Artist Legacy Fellowship, an honor akin to a lifetime achievement award, per Arts Orange County past President and current California Arts Councilperson Richard Stein.
For 20 years, Small fronted Small World, a Dana Point rock band that has played Dana Point Summer Concerts in the Park, Festival of Whales, and many local venues, like the Swallow's Inn in San Juan Capistrano and StillWater in Dana Point.
